Methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE)
PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Methyl tert-butyl ether (tert-butyl methyl ether, 2-methyl-2-methoxypropane, MTBE) is a chemical substance with the chemical formula CH3-O-C(CH3)3, one of the most important representatives of simple ethers.
Methyl-tert-butyl ether (MTBE) is one of the main oxygen-containing high-octane components used in the production of unleaded automobile gasoline. It is used as an additive to motor fuel, which increases the octane number of gasoline, promotes more complete combustion of fuel and prevents corrosion of metals.
At present, ion-exchange resins based on styrene and divinylbenzene copolymer of well-known foreign manufacturers are used for the production of MTBE. The vintage assortment of sulfocation catalysts for the synthesis of MTBE is constantly growing, manufacturers are developing new catalysts that differ in thermal stability, activity and some other characteristics.
USE CASES
It is used as an additive to motor fuels that increases the octane number of gasoline (anti-detonator). The maximum legally permissible volume share of MTBE in gasoline in the European Union is 15%, in Poland – 5%.
MTBE is widely used in the production of high-octane gasoline, while acting as a non-toxic, but less calorific high-octane component and as an oxygenate (oxygen carrier), which contributes to more complete combustion of fuel and prevention of metal corrosion. World consumption of MTBE is 20-22 million tons per year.
