Solvents and glycols
Ethoxy Propanol
PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Ethoxypropanol (also known as propylene glycol ether; ethylproxitol and propylene glycol monoethyl ether) is a clear liquid with a characteristic ethereal odor. It has the formula C5H12O2, is miscible with water, is hygroscopic, and provides good solubility for a wide range of substances, including resins, inks, and adhesives.
USE CASES
Ethoxypropanol is used in a number of industrial, professional and consumer applications because it provides good solubility due to its bifunctional nature. It is compatible with both polar and non-polar substances and is an effective solvent for a wide range of resins, including epoxy, acrylic, alkyd, polyesters, nitrocellulose and polyurethanes. It also provides low toxicity, another property valued by users.
Ethoxypropanol is used primarily in coatings and printing because it can control the flow, alignment, and coalescence of both surface coatings (including water-based inks) and flexographic printing inks. It is also used as an intermediate chemical in the production of agrochemicals and in the production of anti-icing compounds.
Ethoxypropanol is also used in the cleaning industry, where it provides cleaning compounds with reduced surface tension, high evaporation rates, and low toxicity.
New markets may open up for ethoxypropanol because it can provide solubility, viscosity and volatility that are similar to ethylene oxide-based glycol ethers, which are currently facing some pressure from air and workplace regulations around the world. Ethoxypropanol may provide higher workplace exposure limits and is currently not listed as a hazardous air pollutant.
