Ethylene glycol
PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Ethylene glycol (monoethylene glycol) is a flammable, transparent, colorless liquid with an oily consistency, odorless, and sweet in taste. It dissolves well in water, alcohols, ketones, sparingly in benzene, toluene, diethyl ether. Vegetable and animal oils do not dissolve well in ethylene glycol, and mineral oils, paraffins, rubber, acetyl- and ethyl cellulose, polyvinyl chloride do not dissolve. When ethylene glycol is dissolved in water, heat is released and the volume decreases. It is a product of the hydration of ethylene oxide, the simplest representative of polyhydric alcohols, and has all the properties of glycols. Toxic. It is corrosive, has a very high hygroscopicity and strongly absorbs water from the air and other gases.
USE CASES
Ethylene glycol is used in the chemical, textile, automobile, aviation, and electrical industries. It has a unique ability not to freeze at low temperatures. An extremely important property of ethylene glycol is its ability to lower the freezing point of aqueous solutions. Thanks to this, the substance has found wide application in the production of low-freezing and cooling liquids (automotive antifreeze, antifreeze, brake fluids).
In addition, 41-45% of the world production of ethylene glycol is used to obtain synthetic polyester fibers and films: cellophane, polyurethanes and other polymers.
Also, monoethylene glycol is used in the production of hydraulic and tempering fluids, alkyd resins, solvents, capacitors, shoe polish, nitroglycol explosive, and other purposes.
