Hexane is an organic compound, a straight-chain alkane with six carbon atoms, and has the empirical formula C6H14. It is a colorless, odorless, pure liquid with a boiling point of approximately 69 °C (156 °F).

It is widely used as a cheap, relatively safe, largely unreactive and readily volatile non-polar solvent, and modern gasoline blends contain about 3% hexane. Also in:

– Under the conditions of aromatization of petroleum products and catalytic reforming, n-hexane is dehydrocyclized into benzene.

– It is used in the extraction of vegetable oil

– As a degreasing agent

– As a liquid in low-temperature thermometers

– In oil production, hexane is the best solution for dissolving paraffin plugs.

– Hexane is also used in nanotechnology, in particular, iron nanopowder must be moistened with hexane to prevent spontaneous combustion in air.
