Monoethanolamine is a colorless viscous hygroscopic liquid with a specific ammonia smell, it is freely miscible with water, it is well soluble in ethanol, benzene, chloroform, and it is poorly soluble in marginal hydrocarbons. It is the simplest stable amino alcohol, has strong alkaline properties.

Chemical formula: C2H7NO.

Monoethanolamine is obtained together with diethanolamine and triethanolamine by liquid-phase ammonolysis of ethylene oxide in the presence of a small amount of water in one stage. The resulting mixture of ethanolamines, water and ammonia is divided by rectification.

– as absorbents of “sour” gases (H2S, CO2, SO2, etc.) in processes of purification of technological gases at enterprises of oil refining, gas extraction and chemical industries. The absorbed gas is released when the solution is heated, the regenerated monoethanolamine goes into the recycle;

– as a raw material for obtaining emulsifiers, dispersants, foam stabilizers, detergents, shampoos, surfactants, etc.;

– for obtaining ethylenediamine, N-vinylpyrrolidone and a number of other chemical products;

– in pharmaceuticals as a buffer substance and to stabilize emulsions;

– in the production of herbicides, cosmetics, antihistamines.
