Triethylene glycol is a clear liquid, a byproduct of the production of ethylene and diethylene glycol. It is used in the chemical industry (production of low-freezing liquids, oligoether acrylates), as well as oil and gas production (drying agent).

It is widely used as an extractant, solvent, and plasticizer for paint products, adhesives, and printing inks. Triethylene glycol is used as a drying agent for gases, in air conditioning systems, as an additive for hydraulic and brake fluids.

It is a raw material for the synthesis of plasticizers, resins and rubber-like materials. It is also used as a disinfectant in cosmetology to reduce the viscosity of cosmetics.

Mixes in any ratio with water, lower alcohols, glycols, amines, aldehydes, ketones. Limitedly combined with diethyl ether, carbon tetrachloride, tetrachlorethylene.

Poorly dissolves vegetable and animal oils, resins, hydrocarbons. Forms azeotropes with glycerol, acenaphthene, diphenyl, dimethyl phthalate, etc. It forms intramolecular and intermolecular hydrogen bonds with water and amines, due to which aqueous solutions of triethylene glycol have low freezing
